Health Department

Message from  Health Director Dennis E. Harrington

Welcome to the virtual side of the Pamlico County Health Department! I hope the information here is helpful in explaining the public health services provided by the health department and how they work for every county resident in Pamlico. Public Health is working everyday to protect, promote, and improve the health of county residents through a variety of efforts, some of which are working for you at this very moment.

Services such as administering vaccines against potential viruses, controlling mosquito populations, and protecting consumers at area restaurants are some examples being provided to you by your local health department, but that's not all. The health department offers a variety of other services and programs including preventive care, screenings, acute sick care, community outreach and environmental health assistance. We have a staff that includes a Family Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses, Laboratory Technician, Interpreter, Environmental Health Specialists, Registered Dietician, Health Educator, and Administrative Support, all of which are looking forward to serving the needs of Pamlico County.

Preventive care programs such as immunizations, breast exams, diabetes management education, smoking cessation, and blood pressure monitoring are but a few things available in your local health department and are very important. The old adage of "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" has never been more relevant with the prevalence of chronic conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure. It is very important that people follow through with annual check ups and screenings to promote better personal health.

The health department also offers sick clinic services for anyone that is experiencing an acute illness, both children and adults. Our Family Nurse Practitioner sees patients weekly, by appointment or walk-ins, and assists them in receiving treatment. We also provide family planning services through our doctor and Family Nurse Practitioner for all eligible clients.

As you can see, the health department has a lot to offer county residents. Take time to read about the services we provide in the following information below. To learn even more, come by the health department and see for yourself what we have to offer. After all, this is your health department and we are here to serve you.

Sincerely,

Dennis E. Harrington
 Health Director
